The Olympic Torch has circled back around to the home of the London Underground! From July 27th to August 12th, the Olympic Games will be held for the third time in the historic UK city of London, officially dubbed the “Games of the XXX Olympiad”. Over 10,000 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees are expected to compete, making the XXX Olympiad the largest multi-sport event ever to be held in the UK.

Big Ben is set to ring for three minutes straight in celebration of the first day of the Summer Olympics this Friday: the first time in over 50 years that the giant tower has sounded outside of it’s regular hours. To join in on the celebration, thousands of other bells across Great Britain will chime in as well, truly “ringing in” the opening events!

“Isles of Wonder” is the theme of the Opening Ceremony, inspired by William Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest”: a story about men, monsters, magic, and adventure. According to Director Danny Boyle, the ceremonies’ theatrics are supposed to showcase the best as well as the many different aspects of the UK. Features of the Olympic Stadium will include a meadow, livestock, a cricket match, and even a mosh pit (serving as a nod to Britain’s rural summer music culture). Essentially the ceremony will illustrate Britain’s past, present, and future to an audience of approximately 1 billion television viewers and about 60,000 spectators attending in person.

Following the Opening Ceremonies, the competitions schedule is as follows:

For the first time ever, women’s boxing is included in the event schedule, along with the return of mixed doubles in Tennis, which has been MIA since 1924. ZweetSport owners Kimberly and Marja are excited about watching the gymnastics and volleyball competitions (starting July 28th), and ZweetSport Interns Amanda and Taylor are looking forward to the women’s boxing, swimming, and equestrian events! Go team USA!
